Jun. 4--When movie producer David Wolper set out to wow the world at the opening ceremonies for the 1984 Olympic Games, he contacted a 30-year-old Garden Grove native who was building a reputation around Hollywood for eye-popping party decorations made of balloons.

Treb Heining accepted the job, hoping to gain a marketing bonanza for his company, BalloonArt by Treb. But Wolper swore Heining to secrecy before the event.

"Afterward, Treb. Trust me," Wolper said.

On July 28, 1984, millions of television viewers worldwide saw 400 5-foot-diameter gold balloons form the five interconnected Olympic rings in the infield of the Los Angeles Coliseum. ...
