Late on a recent weekday afternoon, a teenager sat on the steps of Holman United Methodist Church on West Adams Boulevard in South Los Angeles, oblivious to passers-by as he read a paperback book.

The book: "The Audacity of Hope," presidential candidate Barack Obama's Pulitzer Prize-winning best-seller.

"No big deal," said Joshua, who declined to give his last name as he waited for his mother to finish a meeting with the pastor of one of Los Angeles' leading African-American churches. "I think I'm the last in the congregation to read it."
