Obesity threatens the health and economic security of the entire United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, and nearly one-third of children are overweight or obese. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has estimated that the expenses associated with obesity in the United States add up to $117 billion each year. In light of these facts, the Campaign to End Obesity--supported by various health organizations--issued a "call to action" on May 16, 2008, outlining what Congress could and should do to address the current obesity trend.
