Higher batting averages or safety?(Law Review)

Deaths and serious injuries related to the use of non-wood bats have been an issue in recent years. On April 2, 1999, Andrew Sanchez, a pitcher for California State University, Northridge, was struck by a line drive off an aluminum bat and suffered serious head injuries (Sanchez v. Hillerich & Bradsby, 2002). In 2001 in Pennsylvania, 15-year-old pitcher Donald Bennett was struck in the face by a line drive from a metal bat, causing him to lose an eye. In 2003, Brandon Patch, an 18-year-old pitcher for an American Legion team in Helena, Montana, was hit in the head by a line drive off an aluminum bat and died several hours later.
