Social stories for students with autism in physical education: this new technique has proven highly effective for teaching students with autism.

Social story interventions are commonly used to promote appropriate behavioral responses in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD; Gray, 2004). This type of intervention is often used in general education contexts, but recently it has been used and examined in physical activity contexts (Rosser-Sandt & Frey, 2005; Zimbelman, Paschal, Hawley, Molgaard, & St. Romain, 2007). Physical educators can use this practical method to present--in a story-like format, including both text and illustrations--meaningful, contextual information about social situations to students with ASD.
