Family television viewing - how to gain control.

Parents should guide their children's television viewing because of the powerful influence of this medium. Studies indicate that watching TV consumes more time than any other waking activity among children and that excessive TV viewing is linked with poor school performance, aggression, obesity and precocious sexuality. Parents can shape their children's viewing habits by setting a good example, setting limits, previewing programs, watching TV with their children and monitoring viewing. Tips for using the television to stimulate children's interests and encourage dialogue are discussed.
