South Africa: Why Leon Sullivan gave up his "principles'
For weeks, the Rev. Leon Sullivanagonized over a knotty question of conscience: Were U.S. companies in South Africa helping to end apartheid by following the fair-employment principles he devised a decade ago? Or was their very presence in an unhappy land lending aid and comfort to Pretoria's "whites only' regime?
In a dramatic reversal of his long-heldposition in favor of reform from within, Sullivan last week dealt a sharp blow to American businesses and the White House: He called on U.S. companies to leave South Africa and demanded that the U.S. sever diplomatic ties with Pretoria and impose a total trade ...
