Boost buoys Catholic schools ; At many sites, enrollment has stabilized or risen

A pledged investment of money and brainpower into several struggling Catholic schools in Eastern Massachusetts has stabilized, and in some cases increased, student enrollment.

The most dramatic impact has been in Gloucester, where the number of students at the last Catholic school on Cape Ann has risen to 180 this year, from 120 last year, after a public promise by the archdiocese, Merrimack College, and several wealthy business leaders emboldened school officials to cut tuition and boosted confidence among parents who feared the St. Ann School might close.
