As fall's labors near, a last summer splash ; Young, old squeeze all they can from vacation's final hours

Children splashed in the Frog Pond, families picnicked at Dorchester's Malibu Beach, and young couples snuggled in the shade on the Esplanade. Amid a clear blue sky and temperatures in the mid- 80s, young and old across the city spent Labor Day trying to squeeze in one last day of summer.

Sure, fall doesn't officially start for another three weeks. But for many in the Boston area, school starts this week, if it hasn't started already. The fall rituals of football and soccer practice are in full swing. And frosty mornings and orange leaves are just around the corner.
