[A PUBLISHED CORRECTION HAS BEEN ADDED TO THIS STORY.]CONCORD - Hundreds converged here yesterday to mark the 200th birthday of one of this town's most famous residents, Ralph Waldo Emerson. But even with the flurry of events held in honor of the philosopher, poet, and essayist, it was clear that his 121-year absence has left many wondering just who he was.

"All I know about Ralph Waldo Emerson is there's a house down the street; it's named after him," said 51-year-old Beth Jeffery, sipping her morning coffee at Helen's restaurant on Main Street. "I drive by it all the time."
