With victory's thousand fathers flocking to Thomas M. Menino's
celebration last night, state Rep. James T. Brett told his supporters
that their high-minded campaign had made it all worthwhile on a night
that found him defeat's chosen orphan.
Declaring that the effort of his volunteers would "shine as an
example of citizenship at its finest," Brett also said he and Menino
had set a standard for issue-oriented, gentlemanly campaign conduct.
"To those who think of elections as sport or entertainment, it
might seem lackluster to refrain from mudslinging or gutter politics,
but those people have a lot to learn about democracy," Brett said.
"Democracy isn't a circus. It's hard work."
