No sooner had James T. Brett claimed his September preliminary victory before a throng of cheering supporters than the first crucial schism of his campaign began cracking open backstage.

Labor organizers wanted to push onward immediately, with plans to attack Thomas M. Menino's performance as a city councilor and put him on the defensive throughout the autumn campaign. Brett intimates, though, wanted to take a few days off, study the numbers and wait for supporters of candidate Francis M. Roache to come back into the fold. In their view, they were starting out virtually even with the acting mayor.
