Ushering Anna into the world

ASHLAND -- To the untrained eye, only Anna's frustration is apparent. Almost 4, Anna Marron picks up small, colored items to place in matching colored buckets, but she's upset, fussing and crying. At her teacher's quiet insistence, she completes the task. The basis for her unhappiness only becomes clear as Jill McGrale- Maher, a program specialist for the New England Center for Children, who oversees Anna's home-based service, explains that Anna's teacher is not allowing her to follow her usual pattern. Children with autism often have rigid preference patterns such as always moving from a red color to blue and then to yellow or always following a left to right motion.
