Moving Day at a Not-Quite Home;Calvary Women's Shelter Residents Take One Box Each to Their New Quarters

When it was time to pack, the women were told to put all of their things into one box each. Some cheated, and took a little extra. Others asked friends to keep their valuables. But for most, there was little to pack. Being homeless is a bit like being at sea in a sinking ship: All nonessentials go overboard.

"All you have is you," said a 30-year-old Ethiopian immigrant with a delicate oval face and dark eyes, deep as pools. "That, and what people out of the graciousness of their heart will give you."

The occasion was moving day at Calvary Women's Shelter, which for 11 years has had quarters at Calvary Baptist Church, 755 Eighth St. NW.
