ANTHONY L. STIVANELLO, Venice, Italy, Oct. 18, 1907-New York City, May 24, 1999

Anthony L. Stivanello, a stage director and costumer, worked for more than seventy years with scores of American and foreign opera companies. Born in Venice, he immigrated to New York after World War I.

Stivanello was president of the New Yorkbased Stivanello Costume Company, founded by his father in 1924. Celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary this year, it owns more than 100,000 costumes, as well as sets for 150 operas. In 1984, the younger Stivanello added to his holdings by buying Italy's oldest theatrical scenery company, Laboratori Scenografici Sormani of Milan, which had sets for about 600 ...
